The National Blue Alert Network is a system that provides timely and accurate information to law enforcement agencies and the public when a law enforcement officer is killed, injured, missing, or threatened by a violent offender. The network is coordinated by the U.S. Department of Justice and operates through state and local agencies that issue Blue Alerts to notify the public of the suspect’s description, vehicle, and last known location. The National Blue Alert Network was established by the Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu National Blue Alert Act of 2015, signed into law by President Barack Obama on May 19, 2015. The act was named after two New York City police officers who were ambushed and killed in their patrol car on December 20, 2014. The act authorized the Attorney General to create a national Blue Alert communications network within the Department of Justice and to assist states and local governments in developing and implementing their own Blue Alert plans.
The National Blue Alert Network aims to enhance the safety and effectiveness of law enforcement officers across the country and to foster cooperation and coordination among federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial authorities. The network also seeks to promote public awareness and support for law enforcement officers and their families and to honor the service and sacrifice of fallen officers. The web is supported by various partners, including the National Association of Broadcasters, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Federal Communications Commission, and the Office of Community-Oriented Policing Services.
